The prominent Washington Color painter gained international renown in the 1960s and 1970s through innovativeexperimentation with color, texture and form. FOR is a vibrant example of Gilliam’s beveled edge Slice paintings. In these breakthrough works he reshaped the edges of his canvases, redefining the relation their pictorial space to the continuous space they occupy, while simultaneously expanding the emotional potential of color in powerful abstract compositions.
