Sam Gilliam (1933 - 2022 ). lived / worked Washington, DC. Gilliam gained early recognition in the 1960s and 1970s as an innovator of Washington Color Painting through experimentation with color, texture, materials and form. He is internationally renowned for expanding the potential of color in draped canvases, quilted and collaged paintings, and works on paper. Gilliam represented the United States at the American Pavilion in the 1972 Venice Biennale. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, Phillips Collection, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Art, Walker Art Center, and the Rose Art Museum to name a few.
